The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare | Pre-Summer Blockbuster?
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is an action-packed film directed by Guy Ritchie. Releasing before all the summer blockbusters, this film promises to be a thrilling experience from start to finish. The film is based on the true story of the Special Operations Executive, a secret British organization, during World War II. Founded by Winston Churchill, the group engaged in irregular warfare against the Germans, ultimately changing the war's course and paving the way for modern black operations. Based on the book "Churchill's Secret Warriors" by Damien Lewis, published in 2014. In this Instant Reaction episode of the MovieBuffs Podcast, host Tyler Valencia shares what he thought of this spy thriller, which he saw during an early release. Guy Ritchie, known for his unique style of action movies and witty back-and-forth banter, produces a film that is much more toned down than his earlier films but incorporates sequences that will have audiences jamming out. The film features a stacked cast led by Henry Cavill, who is said to be the inspiration Ian Flemming used for James Bond.  This film is fun to watch in theaters and will likely attract Ritchie and Cavill fans. Reserve your seats and purchase confidently, knowing you’ll walk out with a smile. Instant Reaction - Road House | Remake Worth Watching?
Remakes are becoming increasingly common as the movie industry tries to lure moviegoers back to the theaters. However, what makes a good remake? Is it a high fan score? An engaging story? A remake that pays tribute to the original while also adding a fun and creative twist is one way to get the audience to appreciate the effort and want to see more. Unfortunately, the 2024 remake of Road House fails to accomplish this task and leaves the audience with a bitter taste of action just for the sake of action. In this episode of the MovieBuffs Podcast, host Tyler Valencia breaks tradition, provides a review that could be more encouraging for original fans, and discusses where the film takes a turn for the worse. On paper, the remake of Road House seemed like a fun and intelligent way to attract a wider audience to the cinema. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal as Dalton, this attempt focuses on his backstory as a UFC fighter who is hired as a bouncer to keep the rowdy crowd out of a Florida Keys bar. The UFC is a billion-dollar entertainment industry with fans all over the world, but this element isn't as prominent in the movie, and the sequences featuring Conor McGregor come across as silly. Listen to this spoiler-free episode and find out who Tyler thinks might enjoy watching this remake. Instant Reaction - Dune: Part Two | Oscar Worthy?
Dune: Part Two is in theaters and continues director Denis Villeneuve’s vision of the classic text from Frank Herbert. Paul Atreides joins forces with Chani and the Fremen while seeking revenge against those responsible for House Atreides's downfall. He must choose between his love for Chani and the destiny of the entire universe as he tries to prevent a catastrophic future that only he can predict. Starring a packed cast of A-list actors, this second installment is highlighted by Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, and Javier Bardem.  In this Instant Reaction episode in the MovieBuffs Podcast, host Tyler Valencia gives a spoiler-free review and shares some of his knowledge regarding the movie's production and the text Frank Herbert created. Surprisingly, Dune: Part Two was not automatically green-lit by the studios due to the state of the movie industry in 2021, and the uncertainty of big blockbuster movies would continue. With recent action movies proving that the movie industry is not going anywhere soon, Dune: Part Two succeeds with amazing visuals and storytelling that is true to the source material. Instant Reaction - Argylle | Issues with marketing?
An early 2024 action release that is already causing a stir is Argylle. Directed by Matthew Vaughn (Kick Ass, The Kingsmen, & X-Men: First Class), this film follows writer Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard) as her spy novels start to become eerily close to the truth. This film features a stacked cast alongside Howard, including Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa, John Cena, Sam Rockewell, Bryan Cranston, and Samuel L. Jackson. Host Tyler Valencia starts this episode by sharing who he thinks would enjoy this movie. Espionage-type movies are typically big hits and one of the mainstays in Director Vaughn's arsenal, but this film leans heavily into his unique action style. Argylle, as a movie, is not dark, not gritty, and not necessarily a movie that leans into real-life situations, but rather is a fun time on screen and features action scenes that are bright and funny. Tyler's biggest issue with this movie is how it was marketed. Tyler goes into a rant about how movies these days are trying to trick audiences into heading into the theater instead of showcasing visuals and stories, which is part of the experience of going to the movie theater. The marketing for Argylle puts three actors center-stage who are not the main characters and dismisses features of Vaughn’s filmmaking that get his fans to the theater.  If you’ve seen Argylle, what do you think? Rankings - My Three Favorite Holiday Movies (2023 Edition)
Holiday movies are a popular genre that brings joy to the season and elicits all the emotions we love. Several holiday movies are released each year, on top of the classics such as Christmas Vacation, Bad Santa, and Love Actually, so how do you choose which ones to watch? In this Rankings episode of the MovieBuffs Podcast, host Tyler Valencia gives three holiday movies he watched for the first time this last year in hopes that they make it onto your watchlist this year. The three movies featured in this episode are The Holdovers, Your Christmas or Mine?, and Feast of the Seven Fishes. In this episode, Tyler provides a detailed introduction by highlighting the main focus of the discussion. The focus is not on ranking the all-time best holiday movies but instead on suggesting newer movies that you can stream during the upcoming holiday season. Not all holiday movies are worth watching, so the three films reviewed in this episode have been carefully selected for their rewatching qualities. These movies can be easily incorporated into your regular holiday season binge-watching routine, making your holiday season more enjoyable and memorable. Instant Reaction - Wonka | A New Family-Friendly Addition
A surprise late 2023 release, Wonka is a fun and refreshing take on Roald Dahl’s material, which centers around Wonka’s first attempts at entering the competitive chocolate market. Starring Timothée Chalamet as the titular character, the movie includes new takes on the classic songs, a fun backstory to the chocolate cartel, and familiar family vibes that we all experienced watching the 1971 classic rendition. In this episode of the MovieBuffs Podcast, host Tyler Valencia shares his recommendation on Wonka and why he believes it’s worth the watch during this slow movie release schedule. An interesting point that Tyler opens the episode with is how the film was not marketed as a musical. Although featuring musical elements and similar vibes as the classic 1971 version, fun musical elements are sprinkled throughout the movie, which engage the audience. Headed up by much of the same team that released the Paddington movies, this film is a family-friendly addition that all ages can enjoy together. Instant Reaction - The Marvels
The Marvels is the latest MCU release getting a surprisingly strong amount of criticism. Led by Brie Larson and featuring Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani, this installment teams up these three superheroes to stop a Kree revolutionary wanting to repay Captain Marvel for what she believes she did to her home planet. This MCU film, directed by Nia DaCosta (Candyman), features quality action sequences and an enjoyable storyline with family, growth, and support themes. In this Instant Reaction episode of the MovieBuffs Podcast, host Tyler Valencia shares what he liked about The Marvels and why he believes Iman Vellani is one of the best additions to the MCU. Ms. Marvel was a surprise series that didn’t get as much hype as it should have. Unlike other Marvel properties, The Khans are a family that supports and cares for their superhero daughter, Ms. Marvel. The change of pace the Khans bring to the MCU is welcoming and a breath of fresh air to the usual dark and adverse storyline brought on these days. Kamala, as a superhero, wants to help others and make her family proud and is all about the responsibility of being a superhero. She brings an onscreen presence that will continue to grow as she ushers on the next generation. Instant Reaction - Leave the World Behind
End-of-the-world thriller movies can be hit or miss, but Leave the World Behind on Netflix is an edge-of-the-seat story that elicits several emotions, including the belief this story could play out in real life. From writer/director Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot), this story follows a family of four setting out on a vacation away from the busy city and looking to unwind until a strange knock at the door starts a cascade of cyberattacks that makes you question whose behind it all. In this Instant Reaction episode of the MovieBuffs Podcast, host Tyler Valencia goes through some of his favorite aspects of the film and discusses which audience might appreciate this story more than others. The quick analysis is that Leave the World Behind reminds audiences of good M. Night Shyamalan with a Mr. Robot twist. The pieces of this film that will keep the audience engaged is the belief that they could wake up tomorrow and this film is playing out right in front of their eyes. Sam Esmail’s familiarity with this content shows throughout this movie, and the character arcs possess qualities that all good films present.  Follow Tyler on Instagram - CLICK HERE. Learn more about the MovieBuffs Podcast - CLICK HERE. Subscribe to Tyler Valencia Fitness - CLICK HERE. Learn more about Naboso Performance Insoles - CLICK HERE. Buy Dumbbells on Amazon - CLICK HERE. Buy New Business Cards - CLICK HERE.

Instant Reaction - The Killer
A late 2023 Netflix release, The Killer is David Fincher's latest film, a stylish noir similar to his previous works of art. Starring Michael Fassbender as the film's main character, the killer, this story follows his character as he goes on a revenge tour, which is spared by an early event in the movie. This Instant Reaction episode in the MovieBuffs Podcast is a spoiler-free review of the film and a small dive into David Fincher's background. Host Tyler Valencia provides feedback on the storyline, discusses some of its unique choices, and shares his research with director David Fincher. As stated early in this episode, this film is not for everyone and takes a particular type of viewer. If you’re a fan of David Fincher films, you will undoubtedly enjoy the shot choices and story laid out for the viewer, but if a slow-building movie that mostly features inner dialogue doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, maybe select a different choice on Netflix. Instant Reaction - Next Goal Wins
An under-the-radar movie that’s available for consumption is Next Goal Wins. Telling the story of the American Samoa soccer team that famously lost to Australia 31-0, this new Taika Waititi film is fun and heartwarming. Starring Michael Fassbender as Thomas Rongen, this film follows the main character, going from his lowest lows to finding a new home (and family) on the American Samoa island.  One of the most significant themes featured in this film is finding happiness. It’s often believed that a coach needs to be harsh and brutal to their athletes to get the most out of them, but what about finding what makes them tick and what gets the most out of them? The story arc of Fassbender’s character shows him learning about the American Samoa culture and why happiness is a part of the views. Ultimately, Fassbender’s character embraces this outlook, and we understand why he struggled mentally before coming to the island.  Instant Reaction episodes in the MovieBuffs Podcast are spoiler-free reviews of films. Instant Reaction - The Covenant

Instant Reaction - The Covenant
Available on Amazon Prime Video, The Covenant is a Guy Ritchie film that might surprise you. Not only does it not include the usual witty Ritchie slang, but it is a US military-based film that leans heavily into the story of the Afghanistan war and the interpreters that help US soldiers. This film did not do too well at the box office, but in its second life on streaming, it might be someone you can pop on the television during the weekend. In this Instant Reaction episode of the MovieBuffs Podcast, host Tyler Valencia gives his spoiler-free review of the film and why he was surprised by the story The Covenant lays out. This Ritchie film doesn’t include any artsy transitions or close-up GoPro running scenes, but instead tells the story of a US Staff Seargent needing to repay his debt to an interpreter (Ahmed) who saved his life. One of the significant differences a viewer experiences during this film is how different it is from the theatrical trailer. The trailer leaned heavily into Jake Gyllenhaal’s character and his heroics to save Dar Salim’s character, but in reality, the movie is flipped. Salim’s heroism is a significant part of the film and one that the audience is on the edge of their seat for. Listen to this latest episode and hopefully take a chance on this film! Main Set - Cassandro
A late summer release available on Amazon Prime Video is Cassandro, which follows the true story of Cassandro, the ''exotico'' character created by Saúl Armendáriz, a gay amateur wrestler from El Paso who rose to international stardom. Directed by Roger Ross Williams, this film features themes of overcoming adversity, breaking tradition, and family dysfunction, told through the lens of Saúl as he follows his dream of being a well-known exotico. Cassandro, featuring Gael Garcia Bernal in the lead role, is supported by Roberta Colindrez, Perla De La Rosa, Raul Castillo, Bad Bunny, and MovieBuffs Podcast's own Ronald Gonzales-Trujillo. In this special episode of the MovieBuffs Podcast, Ronald returns to the podcast post-actors strike and shares what it was like working on this film, and both hosts discuss their favorite aspects of the film. One of the more interesting parts of this episode is when Ronald shares what it was like working on a film during the pandemic in 2020. This included multiple days of testing and quarantining, which was on top of preparing for his first role in a major motion picture. Ronald got this role without the help of an agent and discusses what it was like preparing for the role and his experience being in a foreign country where he speaks only a fraction of the language.  Follow Ronald on Instagram - CLICK HERE. What To Watch - Flora and Son, Sex Education Season 4, and The Holdovers
Nov 20 2023
What To Watch - Flora and Son, Sex Education Season 4, and The Holdovers
October is typically a month of new horror releases, but what if you’re not a fan or looking for different types of content? In this episode of the MovieBuffs Podcast, host Tyler goes over three pieces of content you can watch in October. We all spend countless time searching for new series to watch on the hundreds of streaming platforms or scrolling through movie apps; hopefully, this is a new podcast series to cut back on that time. Tyler goes over the content in this episode: Flora and Son, Sex Education Season 4, and The Holdovers. Flora and Son is a new movie by director John Carney, now available on Apple TV. If you’re a fan of movies that heavily feature music, John’s movies should be immediately added to your watch list. Other movies by this director are Sing Street, Begin Again, and Once, which can be found on different streaming platforms. Sex Education, available on Netflix, has four seasons available for streaming. Revolving around aging teenagers and all their wild experiences, it’s easily one of the best series available on all the streaming platforms. Sex Education stars Gillian Anderson, Asa Butterfield, Emma Mackey, and Ncuti Gatwa.  The Holdovers, releasing October 27th in select theaters (worldwide November 10th), brings back the director-actor combo of Alexander Payne and Paul Giamatti. Set in the 1970s, Giamatti plays an unlikable school teacher who is forced to watch over a select few students during the holiday break. Eventually, it narrows down to Gimatti’s character, the school’s head cook, and a student whose family unfortunately passed away. These three characters grow together, showing you aren’t beholden to your past. Instant Reaction - Blue Beetle

Instant Reaction - Blue Beetle
A welcomed surprise from DC Studios is Blue Beetle. Featuring a primarily Hispanic cast of actors, Blue Beetle focuses on family and culture, which are strongly featured throughout the movie. In the title role, Xolo Mariduena (Cobra Kai) packs a punch as Jaime Reyes and exceeds expectations. This Instant Reaction episode of the MovieBuffs Podcast gives a spoiler(-ish) free review of Blue Beetle and discusses its strengths and weaknesses. With DC Studios going through a soft reboot, which has seen many story arcs and characters leave the studio, Blue Beetle is one franchise that may continue with the new cast of DC superheroes. This production is mainly self-sustained and doesn’t feature any other DC character cameos, which is a nice welcome for a comic book movie. With comic book movies wanting to go bigger and feature more characters, Blue Beetle focuses on Jaime’s story and his connection to his family. Produced on a relatively modest budget for comic book movies, hopefully, Blue Beetle can outperform its box office projections and warrant a sequel. Rankings - Ted Lasso, Trying, & C.B. Strike (British Invasion)
If you’re looking for a new show or two, this rankings episode of the MovieBuffs will go over two shows on Apple+ and Max. Rankings episodes in the MovieBuffs Podcast are designed to provide our audience with series that are currently available for viewing and, if you want, binging. Host Tyler Valencia will share details about Trying, Ted Lasso, and C.B. Strike in this episode. At the moment, each of these series already has three seasons released, and both Trying and C.B. Strike are scheduled for a fourth. The most surprising part of this episode is where Tyler ranks the last season of Ted Lasso. Once a global hit, Tyler dives into why he thinks this show fell off a cliff and got away from what made it a unique watch. Sadly, this last season of Ted Lasso featured less about Ted and his quirkiness and more storylines that detract from what made viewers fall in love with this show. In no reality would a professional sporting team hire a coach from a completely different sport with no experience at the highest level of coaching. Despite that reality, Ted’s euphemisms and wacky stories made this show lovable. Its demise was noticeable and may be part of why it will not return for a fourth season. Let’s hear your thoughts on these three shows and where you would rank them! Instant Reaction - Gran Turismo
Not just for racing fans or video gamers, the release of Gran Turismo is a story and cinematic experience that all moviegoers can enjoy. Based on the true story of gamer turned professional race car driver Jann Mardenborough, Gran Turismo follows Jann’s rise through the Nissan driver’s academy and up to his first 24 Hours of Le Mans. Directed by Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium, and Chappie), this two-hour action-packed movie has excellent character arcs, visual effects, and a story that keeps watchers engaged. In this Instant Reaction episode of the MovieBuffs Podcast, host Tyler Valencia goes through all the details of the movie and then discusses his favorite elements of the story. One element that Tyler discusses is Neill Blomkamp’s directing. Having been out of the limelight for a few years and primarily directing science-fiction-based movies, Blomkamp hits a home run by integrating visual effects and character development. Blomkamp’s background in visual effects comes through in his movies as its integration is never overbearing or an afterthought. In Gran Turismo, the visual effects provide insight into Jann’s mindset and how he sees the racetrack. This movie is a great watch for all moviegoers and fun for racing enthusiasts. Instant Reaction - Oppenheimer
Christopher Nolan fans rejoice! Oppenheimer has hit theaters and hit them in a big way. Oppenheimer has exceeded projections with a five-day global box office number that has already surpassed 200 million. Announced in September of 2021 after a studio bidding war had taken place, Oppenheimer is Nolan’s 12th film. Oppenheimer tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in developing the atomic bomb. Played by Cillian Murphy, Oppenheimer is a deep dive into this man’s history and psyche before and after the development of the atomic bomb. Shot without the use of CGI and available in IMAX, Oppenheimer is a film that is not only visually stunning but also mixed with a beautifully paired score. Along with Cillian Murphy, the cast is one of the most talented ensembles we’ve seen. The cast of Oppenheimer includes Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Josh Hartnett, Jason Clarke, Dane DeHaan, Rami Malek, Casey Affleck, and Alden Ehrenreich. With a handful of drama surrounding the release of this movie, Oppenheimer is one of the best movies to come out in the last ten years. One criticism around the social media sphere was that the Oppenheimer movie glorifies the atomic bomb. This movie does not “Hollywoodize” Robert Oppenheimer or make him appear in a better light than the unfortunate life that he lived. This is a must-see if you’re a cinema fan and want to experience a visually stunning movie.
