Our Editor's Take

Sistas Who Kill: A True Crime Podcast explores the complex lives of Black women murderers. Cohosts MaRah and Taz uncover mysteries and inequities the justice system often overlooks. Why did these women kill, and what happened to them after the court found them guilty? Who were their victims? This true crime podcast offers insight into a unique population of killers.

Each episode of Sistas Who Kill tells the story of one murder. Sometimes, the murderer is a young Black girl or an exhausted mother. One episode of the podcast enters the world of twin sisters Jasmiyah and Tasmiyah Whitehead. In 2010, they committed a brutal killing. Did their mother, Nikki, deserve such a death? What caused these girls to kill her?

Tas and Jas were good girls. They were honor students and Girl Scouts who lived with their grandmother. The trouble began when Nikki took custody of them in 2007. Only three years later, at 17, the girls attacked Nikki. They beat and stabbed her, then left her for dead. Both girls pleaded not guilty. Yet they soon found themselves in jail, where they remain. On the podcast, MaRah and Taz investigate whether this is a tale of false narratives. Who is to blame?

Another episode analyzes the Latonia Bellamy case. When the 19-year-old was out with friends one night, she spotted a couple carrying a pizza box. The friends had been examining their firearms and wanted to try shooting them. They first robbed the victims and then shot them. The police classified the crime as a "thrill killing." A judge sentenced Latonia to life in prison in 2013. This senseless murder cost a young couple their lives. Latonia doesn't think she's a monster. She claims she wanted to get an education and serve troubled youth. Was what happened that night an accident of circumstance? Or is Latonia a cold-blooded killer?

As Jaz and MaRah search for answers, listeners hear harrowing cases of Black women turned murderers. These include the Bresha Meadows, Carla Scott, and Kandesha Byers cases. New episodes of Sistas Who Kill: A True Crime Podcast appear every week.
